Papers, 1783-1823.

Consists of 62 accounts, bills, receipts, and other documents pertaining to household items purchased by the Russells, shipping transactions, the settlement of William Russell's estate, and a drawing of the family home in Richmond, Va. A receipt book (1785-1820) records payment of accounts in New York City and Richmond, shipping freight, and expenses for traveling from Richmond to Philadelphia for Wm. Russell & Co. Also noted are purchases of cloth and flour made in New York between 1817 and 1820, probably by William W. Russell. A second financial volume notes miscellaneous expenses from 1796 to 1799, including hiring a "negro man." A third volume documents William's account with the U. S. Bank Office of Discount and Depot. In 1798 and 1799, the balance was transferred to Sarah. Also featured are Sarah Russell's accounts with John A. Robinson and other merchants for such items as food, fabrics, ribbons, shawls, gun powder, coffee, and other dry-goods. Several documents pertain to rental agreements with John Crawford. An account book from William's estate was used later to make notes about Russell family manuscripts. The writer recorded extracts from letters written by William and William W. in pencil and noted transactions relating to the settlement of William's estate (from documents in the collection).
